What moves Solana (SOL)
As of October 11, 2026. This page describes drivers that already have a public record, and dates that are already on a calendar. It is not investment advice. It does not say to buy, sell, or hold, and it does not forecast a price.
What typically drives the price
New SOL. Solana issues new SOL to stakers and validators. The curve started at 8% a year and steps down by 15% a year until a 1.5% floor. A read of getInflationRate at epoch 1035 on September 15, 2026 showed 3.65%. The foundation's share of issuance was 0 on that read.
On August 28, 2026 validators passed a proposal to double the annual step-down from 15% to 30% (SIMD-0550, also called SGP-0002 in coverage of the vote). The tally reported by CryptoBriefing was 176.29 million SOL in favor and 66.19 million opposed, about 67%. A September 17, 2026 check said the double_disinflation_rate feature gate was not active on mainnet yet. Passing a vote and activating a gate are different events. This page does not treat the faster step-down as live.
The clock. On October 9, 2026 mainnet entered epoch 1053 on a 200-millisecond slot, the last of four cuts (350ms, 300ms, 250ms, then 200ms) under SIMD-0525. An epoch is 432,000 slots, so rewards now land about once a day instead of about once every two days. The same proposal raises slots_per_year so the annual inflation math does not jump just because slots are shorter.
A second validator client. The full Firedancer client has been on mainnet since December 12, 2025. It is a separate codebase from Agave. Outage and client-bug headlines have moved SOL in past years because one client used to be the network. Adoption is still partial. Alpenglow, a later consensus change, was on devnet in October 2026. On September 22, 2026 Anza told testnet operators that Firedancer did not yet support that migration. No mainnet date for Alpenglow was found in the sources checked on October 11, 2026.
Spot products and the rest of the chain. A secondary legal summary published July 1, 2026 says the SEC approved the first US spot Solana ETFs in October 2025, with trading the following month. Confirm the issuer filings before treating a flow print as official. This page does not quote a live flow. SOL also moves with activity in its own applications, especially when a busy day changes fee revenue and attention at the same time. Perpetual funding and liquidations can extend a move. Those feeds are not alert types until they are connected.
How much it usually moves
From October 12, 2025 through October 11, 2026, CoinGecko's daily USD series for solana produced 364 close-to-close changes. The method is in README.md.
The median absolute move was 1.8%. The 90th percentile day was 5.6%. The price moved at least 5% on 46 days, at least 3% on 119 days, and at least 10% on 8 days. The largest close-to-close change in the window was 14.8%.
About 1 day in 8 cleared 5%. A fixed "5% up or down" rule fires on a large ordinary week and stays quiet through many 3% days. Both are the wrong kind of match. An unusual-move alert follows Solana's own recent range instead of one number chosen in advance.
A 5% move inside one hour is a different event from a 5% close-to-close day. This count does not measure the hourly case.
Example alerts
These are examples of wording. They are not recommendations, and they are not live prices. Terminal can run an unusual move, a percent move, a price level, or a volume spike. The note on an alert describes the move. It does not tell you what to do.
- Tell me when Solana (SOL) moves more than usual within an hour.
- Tell me when SOL moves more than usual within 24 hours.
- Tell me when SOL's volume is at least 3 times its 20-day average.
