Alerts and rules

An alert is a rule on a coin. When the rule is met, we message you and keep a record of what the price did next.

Alert types

Open New alert and pick a Rule. The builder offers these types:

  • Price above: the last price goes above a level you set.
  • Price below: the last price goes below a level you set.
  • Percent move: the price rises or falls by a percent you set, inside a window you pick.
  • Volume spike: volume reaches a multiple of the coin's average volume that you pick.
  • Unusual move: the move is large compared with how much that coin has been moving lately.
  • Funding rate: the funding rate on one coin goes above or below a level you set.
  • Open interest: open interest on one coin changes by a percent you set, inside a window you pick.

After Price above or Price below fires, it can fire again once a check finds the price back past your level. Under those types, the builder shows how far.

Unusual move does not ask for a percent. The builder shows the percent that counts as unusual today, as Usual range today. How we measure an unusual move explains the math.

Funding rate and Open interest are on some plans only. On a plan without them, the builder names the plan that includes them.

When world events are on for your account, the builder also offers an alert on a coin's move after a world event. World lists the events Terminal records.

How checks run explains how often we check each rule.

Build an alert in plain English

At the top of New alert, type a sentence into Describe the alert, then choose Read this. An example: "Unusual moves on SOL".

The builder answers with We read that as: and one sentence. It fills in the fields below, such as Coin, Rule, Amount and Window. Check them and change any field you want.

Saving uses the fields, not your sentence. Choose Save alert to turn the alert on.

If the builder cannot run your sentence, it says so and suggests a type it can run. Terminal does not tell you to buy, sell, or hold.

The preview

Before you save, the builder checks your rule against stored prices. A mark shows each time the rule would have fired, with a count under the chart.

The preview is labeled as a backtest. It is hypothetical, not a forecast. Nothing is sent while you preview.

The Noise check under the count says Quiet, Busy or Noisy. If the rule would have fired more than once a day on average, raise the wait or the amount before you save.

If there is not enough price history, the preview says so. You can still save. What does the preview show? has more.

Cooldowns, quiet hours and the daily limit

Each alert has a field called Wait before it can fire again. After the alert fires, we wait that long before it can fire again. Unusual move starts with a longer wait than the other types.

Quiet hours pause messages on a schedule in your time zone. Turn them on with Pause messages on a schedule on Alerts and quiet hours. We still record each alert while messages are paused.

The Daily message limit caps how many messages we send you in a day. When you reach it, new alerts stay on Today and go into the next brief. You set the number on the same screen.

On some plans, you can also turn on Group rule alerts into a brief. You then get one message on the brief schedule instead of one message per alert. How do quiet hours and the daily limit work? has the details.

Mute and snooze

Open an alert from Alerts to find these buttons:

  • Mute stops messages for that alert. Today keeps recording it. Choose Unmute to get messages again.
  • Snooze pauses messages from that alert for the time its button shows. Choose End snooze to stop early.
  • Turn off stops the rule itself. Choose Turn on to start it again.

Today marks a recorded alert that did not message you. The badge says Muted, Snoozed until a time, Held for quiet hours, or Held for the daily limit.

Watchlist

The Watchlist holds the coins you can use in alerts. Choose Add coin, then search for the coin. Adding a coin does not turn on an alert.

Percent move, Volume spike and Unusual move can watch every coin on your watchlist at once. In the builder, choose Any watchlist coin as the coin. A coin you add later is covered too.

To remove a coin, choose Remove next to it. If an alert uses that coin, edit or delete that alert first.

Receipts and what happened next

A receipt is the record of what the price did after an alert. Open the alert and look under Price afterward.

We store the price at the alert, then at set times after it. A slot says not in yet until its time comes. Each price shows its source.

Open a rule from Alerts to see Every alert from this rule. Each time it fired stays on that list with its receipt. The ones that went the other way stay too.

Past alerts record what the price did. They do not predict what it will do. How receipts work explains how we record them.

Limits by plan

Your plan sets how many alerts can be on at once and how many coins your watchlist holds. The builder shows how many alerts you use out of your plan's limit.

Your plan also sets how often we check your rules and how long we keep receipts. Plans lists each plan's limits.

At the limit, the builder shows how to make room instead of Save alert. If you move to a smaller plan, alerts over the new limit pause. They are not deleted.
